Dubai conducted its first test flight of a flying taxi built by Joby Aviation on Monday, June 24, 2024. This significant milestone is part of Dubai’s future transportation system and aligns with the broader plans for the official launch of taxi services in the first half of 2026.

  • Enhance mobility: The goal of Dubai flying car 2025 development is to improve urban mobility while making your travel experience smoother and less troubled by traffic congestion.
  • Gyroplane in design and structure: Holland-based mobility solution provider PAL-V revealed its flying car at the Sharjah Research Technology and Innovation Park (SRTIP). Fun fact: the car can quickly convert into a gyroplane in under five minutes and can fly up to 500 kilometers at a speed of 180 km/h.
  • Will take to the skies soon: The Dubai flying car is expected to fly in the UAE by 2027, following regulatory approvals from local authorities, said Robert Dingemanse, CEO and co-founder of PAL-V, in an interview with Khaleej Times. 
  • Flying car price in UAE: The expected retail price starts at $800,000 (Dh2.9 million).This reflects a high-end market offering a blend of innovation and practical functionality, designed for top-tier performance both on the road and in the air.
  • Safer version of helicopter: According to PAL-V, the Dubai flying car is a safer version of a helicopter, has a similar range and speed, but is limited to two persons and 20 kg of luggage.

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) of Dubai, in collaboration with U.S.-based Joby Aviation, announced the successful test flight on June 30, 2025. The event was attended by His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai.

Where Was It Revealed?

The test flight took place at a designated desert test site, Dubai Jetman Helipad facility in Margham, located along the Dubai–Al Ain Road.

What are the specifications of the flying car?

The aircraft is an all-electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) vehicle developed by Joby Aviation. Key specifications include:

  • Top Speed: 320 km/h
  • Range: 160 km per charge
  • Capacity: 4 passengers + 1 pilot
  • Noise Level: 100 times quieter than a helicopter
  • Emissions: Zero emissions, aligning with Dubai’s sustainability goals.

What is the Launch Timeline?

Initial routes will connect key locations such as Downtown Dubai, Dubai International Airport (DXB), Palm Jumeirah, and Dubai Marina. Based on the latest updates, the commercial air taxi service is expected to launch in early 2026. However, the official launch timeline is still subject to regulatory approvals.

Current Development Stage

Joby Aviation has received a six-year exclusive operating agreement from Dubai’s RTA. Construction has begun on the first commercial landing port at Dubai International Airport, and there are plans for additional vertiports at the Palm Jumeirah, Downtown Dubai, and Dubai Marina are ongoing. 

What It Means for Residents and Visitors ? 

For the successful implementation of the Dubai flying car, a framework was set to reduce travel time and remove traffic congestion. This means in the near future, say no to long commutes, as journeys between destinations like Dubai Airport and the Palm Jumeirah will be reduced to just a 12-minute ride instead of 45 minutes by car.

Today, it’s the flying taxi; tomorrow, we can expect many more developments, such as autonomous air cargo drones, AI-powered traffic control systems, and hyperloop transport corridors that could eventually connect Dubai to other major GCC cities in minutes.
